The Grasshopper

Today is "dress as your favorite book character" day for Benjamin's class.

The wonderful mother that I am totally forgot about it until I got the reminder e-mail from his wonderful and amazing teacher last night.  When I read the e-mail my stomach flipped and flopped.  I groaned out loud and thought to myself (sarcastically of course):

Great.. Exactly what I wanted to be doing tonight. Figuring out a costume for a book character.

But out loud I said (excitedly as I could, of course):

Benjamin, you get to dress up as your favorite book character tomorrow for school!  How exciting! Who is your favorite book character bud? Why don't you look at your shelf and find a book and we can work on it.

He came back like 5 seconds later carrying a bug book. Not any bug book but a book about bug facts.  Now for those of you who know him well, know that he is as obsessed with bugs as Rachel is with dinosaurs. He LOVES bugs. He is constantly looking for, playing with, holding and capturing bugs.  Bugs of all sorts.  He turns them into his pets.  In fact he has a 'pet' named Flyee that has lived for 2 years (even though I have secretly killed him about 3 dozen times), but if you talk to him Flyee is still alive, and he will forever be alive.  Don't you dare kill Flyee - there you have been warned.

But I digress.

So he brings me this bug book and says:

I want to bring this book and be a GRASSHOPPER!!!!  (Insert HUGE grin here.)

I took a huge deep breath, said Okay.  Then sent him outside to play so I could freak out in private.

When he was out of the house I did freak out.  What the heck!?   How am I supposed to make him look like a grasshopper!!!!

Then I called Marc.

He laughed, calmed me down and together we figured out a perfect last minute costume together:

Green pants, green shirt, his Minion goggles for his costume this year (THAT is an entirely different story....) and green pipe cleaners for the antenna.

Benjamin was in LOVE!  He learned 4 fun facts about grasshoppers and couldn't wait to show his friends AND freak out his teacher who doesn't like bugs. HAHAHAHA!  Poor lady doesn't know what she got herself into!

And this morning at 6 am he came into our room all dressed up and ready to go to school.  Goggles and all.  We laughed so hard, he smiled HUGE and hopped into our bed.

Man our kid is such a geek......

We love him.
