Painting

Rachel has been yearning to do some painting for a while, I'm not sure where she got the idea but she has been very persistent about it. When she gets her 'eyes' set on something or gets an idea about something she doesn't let it go. She is a very strong willed child, which can be a good thing but also a very hard thing to deal with sometimes. I've wanted to give her the opportunity to paint but I was also afraid of getting out everything and having to supervise two small children with paint and paint brushes. I'm sorry but that is a little too much stress for me to handle. Especially if any of you know Benjamin and his FASCINATION with drawing on anything. I will let you imagine for a minute what that would have been like . . . scary thought huh?

Well last night Marc had a meeting to go for the scouts, so I asked him to take Benjamin with him. That way the two of them could spend some time together, and then Rachel and I could spend some time painting. It worked out beautifully!

She was so excited about being able to paint, she could hardly contain herself. After getting the paints out and getting everything set up I realized that my choice in colors was lacking; I only had red, green, white and black. But she made do and had a blast. We painted for an hour and talked. It was really nice and something that we both needed.
She ended up painting two pictures. The one on the right has a flower on it, Pluto, a sun and her hand prints. The one the left she calls her 'big colorful candy rock.' Colorful is a very good descriptive word for it. She covered every square inch of that paper in paint. You can't even tell that at one point it was the color purple.

What a good mom. I cringe a bit too when the kids want to paint. Watercolors are a fun alternative because they are not quite as messy. We also just found some fun paints in bottles with sponge tops and the paint is washable -- even Brook can use them without too much supervision. I still don't know what to do with all of their masterpieces.

We paint at our house a LOT! It worried me, too, at first, but with washable watercolors I can relax and ladies can paint away. I send 'masterpieces' to my folks (who live out of state) and some get put on the fridge.
